PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress increase in traffic generated in an external network due to periodic communication for alive monitoring in a cloud system or the like.SOLUTION: An information processing system includes: a server 10 in which an application for executing an external data processing request is implemented; and a client 20 that transmits a data processing request to the application via an external communication network 30. The server 10 and the client 20 mutually transmit periodic communication data for alive monitoring for mutually monitoring whether the counterparts operate normally and for monitoring whether the external communication network 30 operates normally, so that the server 10 and the client 20 can monitor counterpart operations, respectively. Gateway devices 160 and 210 are provided between the server 10 and the external communication network 30 and between the client 20 and the external communication network 30, respectively, so that the server 10 and the client 20 transmit status information with lower frequency than that of the periodic communication to the respective counterparts on the basis of a status of the periodic communication data and a status of the external communication network 30. 【課題】クラウドシステム等において死活監視のための周期通信により外部ネットワークで発生する通信量の増大を抑制する。【解決手段】外部からのデータ処理要求を実行するアプリケーションが実装されているサーバ１０と、アプリケーションへのデータ処理要求を、外部通信ネットワーク３０を介して送出するクライアント２０とを備えた情報処理システム１である。サーバ１０とクライアント２０とは、互いにそれらが正常に動作しているかを監視する死活監視と外部通信ネットワーク３０が正常に動作しているかを監視するための周期通信データを送出し、相手方の動作を監視している。サーバ１０、クライアント２０と外部通信ネットワーク３０との間には、それぞれゲートウェイ装置１６０，２１０が設けられ、周期通信データ及び外部通信ネットワーク３０の状況から周期通信よりも低頻度のステータス情報を相手方に送信する。【選択図】図６
