Zusammenfassung:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress decrease in transmittance in a wide observation angle range along a horizontal direction of a display screen.SOLUTION: A liquid crystal display device is provided, including a first substrate, a second substrate, a first electrode, a second electrode, and a liquid crystal layer having monodomain vertical alignment and a pretilt angle of less than 90°. A display part is constituted in a region where the first electrode and the second electrode overlap in a plan view. At least one of the first electrode and the second electrode has at least one opening disposed in the display part. The opening has a first branch and a second branch, in which a longitudinal direction of each branch is different from the other, one end of each branch is bonded to the other, and the end side where the first branch and the second branch are bonded is laid as oriented in the substantially same direction as an alignment direction of liquid crystal molecules. A first angle formed by the first branch and an alignment direction of the liquid crystal molecules in substantially the middle in a layer thickness direction of the liquid crystal layer, is equal to a second angle formed by the second branch and the alignment direction of the liquid crystal molecules in substantially the middle in the layer thickness direction of the liquid crystal layer; and the sum of the first angle and the second angle is larger than 45° and equal to or smaller than 80°. 【課題】表示面の左右方向における広い観察角度の範囲で透過率の低下を抑える。【解決手段】第1基板、第2基板、第1電極、第2電極並びにプレティルト角が90?未満であるモノドメイン垂直配向の液晶層を含み、第1電極と第2電極が平面視で重なる領域において表示部が構成され、第1電極又は第2電極のいずれかは表示部内に配置される少なくとも1つの開口部を有し、開口部は、平面視において、各々の長手方向が互いに異なる方向であり各々の一端が結合した第1枝部及び第2枝部を有し、かつ第1枝部と第2枝部の結合した一端側を液晶分子の配向方向と略同じ方向へ向けて配置されており、第1枝部と液晶層の層厚方向の略中央における液晶分子の配向方向のなす第1角度と第2枝部と液晶層の層厚方向の略中央における液晶分子の配向方向のなす第2角度が等しく、かつ、第1角度と第2角度の和が45?より大きく80?以下である、液晶表示装置。【選択図】図1
