PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an elevator capable of always monitoring a state of a main rope, and capable of immediately stopping the elevator when strand breakage occurs.SOLUTION: An elevating machine, for example, an elevator, includes: a plurality of tension adjustment devices having a cage 2, a balancing weight 3, a main rope 4 for lifting/lowering these cage 2 and the balancing weight 3, a wedge 5, a socket 6, a rod 7 and a connection pin 8 and the like, and adjusting the tension of the main rope 4; and an elevator control device 12 for performing operation control of the cage 2. The elevation machine also includes tension measuring devices 1A and 1B permanently installed and held at all the plurality of tension adjustment devices and measuring the tension of the main rope 4. The elevator control device 12 has a tension determination unit for determining whether or not tension 14 and 15 suddenly changed due to strand breakage, on the basis of the tension 14, 15 of the main rope 4 measured by the tension measuring devices 1A, 1B. 【課題】主ロープの状態を常時監視することができ、ストランド切れが発生した場合に当該昇降機を直ちに停止させることができる昇降機の提供。【解決手段】本発明に係る昇降機は、例えばエレベータであって、かご２及びつり合い重り３と、これらのかご２及びつり合い重り３を昇降させる主ロープ４と、くさび５、ソケット６、ロッド７、及び連結ピン８等を有し、主ロープ４の張力を調整する複数の張力調整装置と、かご２の運転制御を行うエレベータ制御装置１２とを備えるとともに、前述の複数の張力調整装置の全てに常設保持され、主ロープ４の張力を計測する張力計測装置１Ａ，１Ｂを備え、エレベータ制御装置１２は、張力計測装置１Ａ，１Ｂで計測された主ロープ４の張力１４，１５に基づいて、ストランド切れによって張力１４，１５が急激に変化したかどうかを判断する張力判断部を有している。【選択図】図１
