PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To continue printing as far as possible while determining whether appropriate image formation can be performed, and to interrupt the printing immediately when the appropriate image formation cannot be performed.SOLUTION: An image forming apparatus performs: a positional deviation measurement process (S105) that detects a position of a recording medium to measure an inclination and positional deviation in a main scanning and a sub scanning directions; an image data correction process (S109) that corrects image data when the deviation occurs; a positional deviation amount calculation process (S106) that calculates the amount of positional deviation from a prescribed position of the recording medium on the basis of the measurement result by the positional deviation measurement process; and an image formation determination process (S107) that determines whether or not the calculated amount of positional deviation is within a correctable range. The apparatus, when the amount of positional deviation is determined to be within the correctable range (S108:Y), corrects the image data and then performs an image forming operation by scanning in the next main scanning direction, and when the amount is determined to be out of the correctable range (S108:N), interrupts the image forming operation.
