Zusammenfassung:	PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a novel optical scanner which detects scanning misregistration in a sub-scanning direction with a compact device configuration, and an image forming apparatus including the optical scanner.SOLUTION: An optical scanner includes: N inspection light sources for forming N main-scanning lines continuous in a sub-scanning direction; at least one optical detection sensor arranged on an extension of an image surface of a photoreceptor, and having a light-receiving surface with two light receiving elements arranged side by side at a predetermined distance in the sub-scanning direction, and comparators arranged for each light receiving element and outputting a result of comparing an output signal level according to the amount of light received by the light receiving element with a reference level; and misregistration detection means which detects scanning misregistration in the sub-scanning direction on the basis of the outputs of the two comparators. The two light receiving elements are provided with optical scanners arranged side by side line-symmetrically with respect to a line which divides a bundle of N (N is an integer of 1 or larger) main scanning lines into two in the sub-scanning direction.
