PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ink jet recording device in which ink can be efficiently exhausted, even if difference in ink residual mounts in sub tanks exists, upon performing exhausting processing for exhausting ink in sub tanks and supply tubes.SOLUTION: Upon performing a suction operation for sucking ink with recording heads covered by a cap, the suction operation is, based on ink residual quantities in sub tanks, switched from a first suction operation for sucking ink by decompressing the inside of the cap under a condition of a supply tube passage being open, to a second suction operation in which an operation where the supply tube passage is closed, the inside of the cap is decompressed, and then the supply tube passage is opened, is repeated for ink suction.
