PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a chair having a surface material mounted on a seat plate by a string material and made into a flip-up type for preventing the knot of the string material from being exposed thereby to prevent the beauty from being deteriorated, even in the case where the lower face is exposed to an observation.SOLUTION: A seat plate 6 is formed in its lower face with an annular groove 63 opened downward, and the peripheral edge of a surface material 8 and a string material 66 attached thereto are fitted in the annular groove 63. The annular groove 63 is interrupted at the rear portion of the seat plate 6, and a knot (or a connecting portion) 66a of the string material 66 and an excess portion are positioned at the interrupted portion of the annular groove 63. The knot 66a of the string material 66 and the excess portion are covered with a cover piece 64. The cover piece 64 is molded integrally with the seat plate 6, and a root portion is formed into a thin hinge portion 64a.
