Zusammenfassung:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a silicon oxide that is effective as a negative electrode active material in a negative electrode material for a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery excellent in cycle characteristics while maintaining high battery capacity and low coefficient of volume expansion of the silicon oxide and process of manufacturing the same, a negative electrode using the same, and a lithium ion secondary battery and electrochemical capacitor.SOLUTION: The silicon oxide for a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery negative electrode material is a particle having a percentage content of Cu of between 100 to 20,000 ppm (mass), a percentage content of Fe of between 20 to 1,000 ppm (mass), a percentage content of Al is 1,000 ppm or less (mass), an average particle size of 0.1 to 30 μm, and a BET specific surface area of 0.5 to 30 m/g.
