Zusammenfassung:	PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an information obtaining device and an article detecting device capable of promptly stopping the outgoing of a laser beam from a laser beam source when breakage is generated on a diffraction optical element.SOLUTION: An information obtaining device includes: a projection unit for projecting light of a dot-pattern in a target area; and a light-receiving unit for imaging the target area by a CMOS image sensor. The projection unit has a laser light source 110, and a DOE 140 for converting a laser beam outgoing from the laser light source 110 into a laser beam of the dot-pattern. The DOE 140 is equipped with electric wiring 142, and the electric wiring 142 is connected to the laser light source 110 in series. When the DOE 140 is deformed in an incident direction of laser and broken and the electric wiring 142 is broken, the supply of a driving current to the laser light source 110 is intercepted, and the outgoing of the laser beam from the laser light source 110 is stopped.
