PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a starter capable of pushing out a pinion to mesh with a ring gear without generating an excessive impact during the reverse rotations of the ring gear.SOLUTION: In a starter 1, a pinion 6 is arranged on an inner tube 26 of a one-way clutch 5 so as to axially move, and between the pinion 6 and the one-way clutch 5, an engaging structure is provided, which engages the pinion 6 and the one-way clutch 5 in a rotating direction when an axial gap G becomes a predetermined distance or less. In an initial state, the pinion 6 is not engaged with the one-way clutch 5 in the rotating direction, and can relatively rotate on the inner tube 26. Even if the pinion 6 is pushed out to a ring gear R during the reserve rotations of the ring gear R, the pinion 6 can be meshed with the ring gear R without generating an excessive impact.
