Zusammenfassung:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a graphite material for a lithium ion battery electrode material, less in contamination of impurities, and useful for obtaining a negative electrode material for a lithium ion secondary battery excellent in stability and high in quality.SOLUTION: A method for producing a graphite material for a lithium ion battery electrode material includes a step of exothermically graphitizing a carbon material by directly passing an electric current therethrough. A carbon material 1 before graphitization has a compact powder resistivity of 0.4 cm or less when compressed to a density of 1.4 g/cm, an angle of repose of 20° or above and 50° or below, and D90 of 120 μm or less. A carbon material 2 after graphitization has d002 of 0.3354 nm or more and 0.3450 nm or less. A relation of (the compact powder resistance when the carbon material 2 after the graphitization is compressed to a density of 1.4 g/cm)/(the compact powder resistance when the carbon material 1 before the graphitization is compressed to a density of 1.4 g/cm)≤0.5 is satisfied.
