Zusammenfassung:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve reduction in irreversible capacity without deteriorating other battery characteristics.SOLUTION: There are provided: a negative electrode material including a carbonaceous substance, while the interplanar spacing (d) of the (002) plane of the carbonaceous substance as determined by an X-ray wide-angle diffraction method is 0.338 nm or less, the cumulative pore volume of the carbonaceous substance in pores having a pore diameter of from 2 nm or more to 3.5 nm or less as determined by a gas adsorption method is 3.0×10cc/g or less, the carbonaceous substance, for example, containing a water-soluble polymer; a negative electrode for a lithium ion secondary battery; a lithium ion secondary battery; and methods for manufacturing them.
