Zusammenfassung:	PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing sugar with excellent productivity, which is capable of efficiently producing sugar from a cellulose-containing starting material.SOLUTION: A method for producing sugar includes the following step (1) and step (2). Step (1): a step wherein a cellulose-containing starting material is pulverized in the presence of a basic compound under such a condition that the water content relative to the dry weight of the cellulose-containing starting material is 40% by mass or less, thereby obtaining a cellulose-containing pulverized material. Step (2): a step wherein the cellulose-containing pulverized material obtained in step (1) is saccharified with an enzyme.
