PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sheet feeding device that can shorten the time to start reading the first sheet without inhibiting the sheet setting operation by a user.SOLUTION: An automatic document conveying device 50 as a sheet feeding device includes: a document table 2 for loading and setting documents: a separating and feeding means for separating the documents and feeding them one by one; a conveying means for conveying the documents to a reading position 20; a discharge means for discharging the documents from the reading position; a document set sensor 5 for detecting whether or not the documents are on the document table; and a document movement detecting sensor SN2 for detecting whether or not the documents on the document table are being set by a user, and performs a feeding preparation operation for the documents after detecting the presence of the sheet by the document set sensor 5, and detecting that the sheet setting operation has been completed by the document movement detecting sensor SN2.
