Zusammenfassung:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To always accurately decide whether or not one compression start is feasible while variably setting the boundary of a piston stop position range enabling one compression start according to the engine state.SOLUTION: If restart conditions are satisfied after automatic stop of an engine, the piston stop position of a stop time compression stroke cylinder, which has been stopped in a compression stroke is specified based on a sensing signal of a crank angle sensor. If the specified piston stop position is on the bottom dead center side with respect to a predetermined reference stop position, one compression start of injecting an initial fuel to the stop time compression stroke cylinder is carried out.
