Zusammenfassung:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an engine that, when an operation is performed by a high expansion ratio cycle, a combustion rate is improved, thereby, a fuel consumption is suitably improved, and the fuel consumption can be also suitably improved from a viewpoint of an expansion ratio and a valve overlap.SOLUTION: An engine 1A includes: exhaust valves 3A and 3B; a piston 8; a VVT30' which can make the phase of the exhaust valve 3A and the phase of the exhaust valve 3B change independently of each other; and a variable compression ratio mechanism 5 which can change a mechanical compression ratio. A valve recess 8a, which is provided in the piston 8 to be made to correspond to the exhaust valve 3A in an early-closing side in the state that a phase difference is maximized, is set smaller than a valve recess 8b, which is provided to be made to correspond to the exhaust valve 3B in a late-closing side. Moreover, the working angle of the exhaust valve 3B is set larger than the working angle of the exhaust valve 3A.
