PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a peripheral part of an original platen from being reflected on a captured image.SOLUTION: A reader includes: a transparent original platen 4 on which an original 3 is placed; a housing 2 for supporting the original platen; an illumination device 5 for illuminating a reading face 3a of the original placed on the original platen; an imaging apparatus 6 for imaging the reading face of the original illuminated by the illumination device; a mirror 7 which reflects light from the reading face of the original and guides it to the imaging apparatus; and a shielding plate 53 for shielding light which is reflected at a peripheral part of the original platen in the housing and advances to a direction of the mirror. Especially, the illumination device and the imaging apparatus are arranged below one end side of the original platen. The mirror is installed in a state where it is inclined to the original platen so that a reflection surface faces the original platen and the imaging apparatus below an other end side of the original platen. The shielding plate is disposed on one end side of the original platen.
