Zusammenfassung:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To uniformly and sufficiently cool the seal area of an end face contact mechanical seal.SOLUTION: Flushing means 8 of jetting a coolant 11 toward the seal areas 5a and 6a of the end face contact mechanical seal 1 comprises a coolant jetting route 12 formed on a seal case 3 and a cooling pressure transfer route 13 for circulatingly supplying the coolant 11 higher in pressure than that of a liquid region to be sealed (A) thereto. The coolant jetting route 12 comprises a cylindrical hollow chamber 14 extending in an axial direction of a rotation shaft 4, a coolant supply passage 15 communicably connected to one end 14a of the hollow chamber 14, and a plurality of coolant jetting holes 16 disposed in the circumferential direction of the seal case 3 with equal intervals, and penetrates through from another end 14b of the hollow chamber 14 to a site directly opposite to the seal areas 5a and 6a. In the coolant supply passage 15, at least the downstream end area is formed into a straight line passage slanting to a virtual face Va orthogonal to the axis of the hollow chamber 14.
