Zusammenfassung:	PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display system and a display method that can optimally control a display direction when information of a portable terminal is displayed by an external device.SOLUTION: A portable terminal determines whether automatic layout is possible that displays an image in response to a longitudinal state in which a short side is directed in a horizontal direction or a lateral state in which a long side is directed in a horizontal direction when connected to a display device. In the case where the automatic layout is possible, image data for displaying the image of the display device in response to the longitudinal state or lateral state is transmitted to the display device. When the automatic layout is not possible, the portable terminal transmits image data for displaying an image in a predetermined display direction to the display device.
