PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a device, of a type described in the technical field section, capable of evaluating a difference image, in particular, as accurately as possible.SOLUTION: In the method for optically testing a test object to be tested during production and/or packing of a printing unit for a cigarette package 10, a test device 11, preferably a camera, is used for recording an electronic image of at least one test object 10, a difference image is formed between the recorded image and a memorized reference image, and image information of the difference image is evaluated with respect to a defect of the test object 10. In the method, in at least one image region in the difference image, the image information of the image region is weighted depending on a position during evaluation of the difference image.
