Zusammenfassung:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of proliferating eukaryotic microbes capable of producing a lipid, particularly a polyenoic fatty acid-containing lipid, and to provide a method of producing eukaryotic microbial lipids.SOLUTION: There are provided the method of proliferating the eukaryotic microorganisms capable of producing at least about 20% of an eukaryotic microorganisms biomass as lipids and the method of producing the lipids. The lipids preferably contain one or more polyenoic fatty acids. A carbon source, preferably a non-alcohol carbon source and a restricted nutrient source are added to a fermentation medium containing the eukaryotic microorganisms. The carbon source and the restricted nutrient source are preferably added at a rate sufficiently enough to increase the biomass density of the fermentation medium to at least about 100 g/L.
