PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce a failure in sucking a medium.SOLUTION: A medium feed device (U2) includes: a suction member (22) that sucks the medium (S) on a stack member (11); a surrounding member (36) that is separated from the stack member (11) together with the medium (S) by suction; a stack-member moving mechanism (SK); suction-member moving mechanisms (46-49+M1); a transport member (Ra) that transports the medium; a detected part (38) associated with the surrounding member (36); a detecting part (SN3) that is supported at the suction-member body (23) and detects the detected part (38); and a detector (C6) that detects a medium surface position based on a detection result of the detected part (38) detected by the detecting part (SN3) when the tip of the surrounding member (36b) moves toward the suction-member body (23) from a state in which the medium (S) contacts the surrounding member. The stack-member moving mechanism (SK) moves the stack member (11) based on the medium surface position.
