Zusammenfassung:	PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium having excellent surface smoothness capable of higher density recording.SOLUTION: The magnetic recording medium has a magnetic layer containing a binder and ferromagnetic powder on a nonmagnetic support. The binder contains as a constituent a polymer having a structural unit represented by the general formula (I), and the magnetic layer further contains a carboxylate compound. In the general formula (I), Rrepresents a hydrogen atom or methyl group, Xrepresents an oxygen atom, sulfur atom or -N(R)- group, Rrepresents a hydrogen atom or substituent, Lrepresents an alkylene group with or without substituents, and Yrepresents a salt formed of a sulfonate group and a methyl group-containing six-membered aromatic amine.
