PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electronic component mounting device and an image reading method used by the electronic component mounting device which are capable of eliminating restrictions on operations of mounting heads caused by an array direction of area sensors by use of image reading units having simplified structure to reduce time required for reading images.SOLUTION: The electronic component mounting device is configured to have an area sensor 24 which can output image signals separately from image pickup devices in which image reading units 6A and 6B for reading images of electronic components held by mounting heads 14A and 14B are arranged in a lattice shape, and configured to be able to read the images by a first-direction scanning operation that moves the mounting head in a first direction above an image pickup device row 25Y while outputting the image signal from the image pickup device row 25Y as well as by a second-direction scanning operation that moves the mounting head in a second direction above an image pickup device row 25X while outputting the image signal from the image pickup device row 25X.
