PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an elevator including a hoist on a car, the elevator contributing to the miniaturization of the hoist and space reduction in a hoistway top part, especially by eliminating constraints of the hoist in a vertical direction.SOLUTION: For example, a high frictional coefficient is obtained by using a rope coated with a resin or a flat belt as a rope 3, the rope 3 is winded on the upper surface a sheave 9, wherein a winding angle of the rope 3 on the sheave 9 is 180° or below, and turning pulleys 6a, 6b of the rope 3 are disposed at both sides of the sheave 9 and at both ends on the upper side of the car so that a ratio Ds/Dr between a diameter Dr of the rope 3 and a diameter Ds of the sheave 9 becomes 20 or lower.
