Zusammenfassung:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a wavelength conversion element which achieves efficient wavelength conversion.SOLUTION: Two light beams different by wavelength are made incident on the wavelength conversion element to generate a second harmonic from one of the light beams and to generate a converted light beam by the occurrence of a differential frequency between the other light beam and the second harmonic. The wavelength conversion element includes: a waveguide portion which comprises a second-order nonlinear optical medium having a periodic polarization reversal structure and has a second harmonic generation part for converting the one light beam to the second harmonic and a phase adjustment part for changing a refractive index of the second harmonic; a first reflecting portion which is provided at an input end of the waveguide portion and reflects the second harmonic; and a second reflecting portion which is provided at an output end of the waveguide portion and reflects the second harmonic. The phase adjustment part performs phase matching between the second harmonic reflected by the first reflecting portion and the second harmonic generated in the second harmonic generation part.
