Zusammenfassung:	PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a phenol resin composition for a friction material having improved heat resistance without impairing moldability of a friction material and a thermosetting phenol resin composition for a friction material.SOLUTION: The phenol resin composition for a friction material comprises a phenol resin formed from phenol and naphthol and a curing agent. The naphthol is 1-naphthol and the amount of the naphthol is ≥3 wt.% and ≤60 wt.% based on the whole phenol resin. The weight-average molecular weight of the phenol resin is 300-3,000 and the curing agent is preferably hexamethylenetetramine.
