PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an imaging element that can be easily manufactured regardless of a rear face irradiation type or a front face irradiation type, and that has a pupil division function that shortens a photographing time to enable high picture quality photographing.SOLUTION: Cross sections of pupil division pixel parts 10 and 11 in a silicon substrate are laterally inverted. The pixel part 10 has: an electric charge generation region 17; a charge storage region 13 provided on the electric charge generation region 17; a barrier region 16 contacted only with the electric charge generation region 17 among the electric charge generation region 17 and the charge storage region 13, and that forms a potential barrier to the electric charge generation region 17; and an electric charge discharge region 15 provided between the barrier region 16 and the silicon substrate surface. The barrier region 16 is provided at a right edge in the pixel part 10 and provided at a left edge in the pixel part 11. A wire 30 for voltage application is connected to the barrier region 16.
