Zusammenfassung:	PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus and method for gasifying biomass, which can perform stable gasification by decreasing the pressure drop of gas flow in a charging moving layer of the biomass formed in a gasification furnace.SOLUTION: The apparatus for gasifying the biomass includes the gasification furnace for obtaining a produced gas by: supplying the biomass from an upper portion of the vertical gasification furnace 3 to form the charging moving layer of the biomass in the gasification furnace 3; supplying a gasifying agent from a lower portion of the gasification furnace 3; and bring the descending biomass of the charging moving layer into counter contact with the ascending gasifying agent to cause thermal cracking. The apparatus further includes: a shaking sieve 1 for classifying the biomass to obtain a granulometry-adjusted biomass in which a proportion by weight of fine grain substance of a biomass lower in particle size than the predetermined particle size is a predetermined value or lower; and a biomass-supplier 2 for supplying the granulometry-adjusted biomass thus obtained in the shaking sieve 1 to the gasification furnace 3.
