Zusammenfassung:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an exhaust device of a multi-cylinder engine which can activate catalyst at an earlier stage while increasing engine output through the utilization of ejector effect.SOLUTION: The device comprises independent exhaust passages 53 which are respectively connected to exhaust ports 18, a flow passage area variable valve 58 which can change a flow passage area of the independent exhaust passage 53 and a flow passage area variable valve drive means 58b. In a low speed region R1, while an exhaust valve 20 is opened during an overlap period of an intake valve 19 and exhaust valve 20 and the flow path area of a high speed side passage 53 is restricted, the intake valve 19 and exhaust valve 20 are overlapped so that intake air passes through a cylinder 12 to blow through an exhaust port 18 when catalyst is inactive therein. On the other hand, when the catalyst is active, the overlap period is made shorter than when the catalyst is inactive.
