Zusammenfassung:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a highly economical method improved in catalyst efficiency (the number of catalyst's repeated uses) for continuously producing a biphenyl compound by oxidative dimerization of the corresponding aromatic compound.SOLUTION: The method for producing a biphenyl compound is provided, comprising the following processes: a reaction zone is continuously or intermittently fed with the corresponding aromatic compound and a catalytic component consisting of a palladium compound, a copper salt and a basic bidentate ligand compound, followed by conducting an oxidative dimerization reaction; wherein the reaction is conducted while continuously or intermittently taking part of the reaction mixture out of the reaction zone. In this method, it is characterized in that: the level of the basic bidentate ligand compound is brought to a specific proportion relative to the palladium compound in accordance with the average residence time of the reaction mixture in the reaction zone.
