Zusammenfassung:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface coated cutting tool capable of executing the high-speed and high-feed cutting of a high-hardness and hardly machinable material such as Ti alloy, high-hardness stainless steel and Ni-based heat resistant alloy while a hard coating layer can demonstrate excellent heat resistance and welding resistance. SOLUTION: The surface coated cutting tool has a hard coated layer consisting of alternate lamination of (a) and (b) below, where (a) an AlCr(M)N thin layer consisting of a compound nitride layer of Al and Cr (and M) satisfying the composition formula: (Al1-αCrα)N, or the composition formula: (Al1-α-βCαMβ)N, and (b) a VYN thin layer consisting of a compound nitride layer of V and Y satisfying the composition formula: (V1-γYγ)N, (where, in terms of the atomic ratio, 0.01≤γ≤0.1) on a surface of a tool base body. In the above, M denotes one or two or more kinds of additive components to be selected among Si, B, and Y, of the elements of 4a, 5a, and 6a groups of the periodic system except Al, and Cr, and α and β satisfy the inequalities 0.45≤α≤0.75, 0.01≤β≤0.25 in terms of the atomic ratio.
