Zusammenfassung: | PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface coated cutting tool whose hard coating layer exerts superior heat resistance and deposition resistance in high speed cutting of a high hardness hard-to-cut material. SOLUTION: In the surface coated cutting tool, the hard coating layer constructed of (a) and (b) is formed on the surface of a tool base body, in which (a) is a lower layer of a composite nitride layer of Al, Cr (and M) satisfying a composition formula: (Al1-α-βCrαMβ)N (where M is one or more additive components selected from periodic table group 4a, 5a, 6a elements, Si, B, Y excluding Al, and 0.45≤α≤0.75 and 0.01≤β≤0.25 in terms of the atomic ratio), and (b) is an upper layer of a composite nitride layer of V and Y satisfying a composition formula: (V1-γYγ)N (where 0.01≤γ≤0.1 in terms of the atomic ratio).
