Zusammenfassung: | PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface coated cutting tool whose hard coating layer exerts excellent heat resistance and deposition resistance in high speed cutting of a hard-to-cut material such as a Ti-alloy, stainless steel and the like. SOLUTION: In the surface coated cutting tool in which the hard coating layer is formed on the surface of a tool base body, the hard coating layer is constructed either of a single layer of a composite nitride layer of V and Y satisfying a composition formula: (V1-γYγ)N (where 0.01≤γ≤0.1 in terms of an atomic ratio) or of a double layer structure formed of a lower layer of a composite nitride layer of Ti and Al expressed by a composition formula: (Ti1-αAlα)N or a lower layer of a composite nitride layer of Ti, Al and M expressed by a composition formula: (Ti1-α-βAlαMβ)N (where M is one or more additive components selected from periodic table group 4a, 5a, 6a elements, Si, B, Y excluding Ti, and 0.45≤α≤0.75 and 0.01≤β≤0.25 in terms of the atomic ratio) and an upper layer formed of the (V1-γYγ)N layer.
