Zusammenfassung:	PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display device that improves a contrast ratio. SOLUTION: The display device includes a first substrate 3 and a second substrate 4. A polarizing layer 7 is directly formed on a surface of the second substrate 4 on a side opposite to the side where the first substrate 3 is disposed. The polarizing layer 7 has a polarizer film 9 and a protection film 10a which is laminated on the polarizer film 9 when seen from the second substrate 4, wherein the polarizer film 9 is made of an aligned lyotropic liquid crystal material. The protection film 10a is made of a material whose refractive index is smaller than that of the polarizer film 9 in a transmission axis direction, and is thinner than the polarizer film 9.
