Zusammenfassung: | PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve a configuration capable of maintaining preferable and constant optical characteristics in a liquid crystal device employing a vertical alignment system, even when various alignment orientation angles are present. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal device includes: a first substrate having a vertical alignment layer on the substrate surface, the alignment layer having initial aligning ability for generating a pretilt angle in a uniaxial direction within a plane parallel to the substrate surface; a second substrate facing the first substrate; a liquid crystal layer, which is disposed between the first substrate and the second substrate and in contact with the vertical alignment layer, has negative dielectric anisotropy and which is imparted with an alignment orientation angle in the uniaxial direction when the device is driven; a pair of polarizing plates disposed respectively in both sides of the liquid crystal layer and having polarization transmission axes perpendicular to each other; and a pair of quarter-wave plates, which are disposed respectively between the pair of the polarizing plates and the liquid crystal layer and have slow axes perpendicular to each other and forming an angle of about 45 degrees with the polarization transmission axis of the adjoining polarizing plate.
