ELECTRO-OPTICAL DEVICE AND ELECTRONIC INSTRUMENT

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electro-optical device, such as a liquid crystal device for displaying a high quality image, for example, by reducing a step on the uppermost layer side of a laminate structure on a substrate. SOLUTION: The electro-optical device is equipped with: a transparent electrode (9) provided on a pixel area on the substrate and patterned in a predetermined shape; an insulation film (45) serving as a base for the transparent electrode; a step reducing film (610) formed in a transparent-electrode non-formation area of the pixel area on the insulation film, except a transparent-electrode formation area where the transparent electrode is formed, and used to reduce a step between the upper-layer side surface of the transparent electrode and the upper-side surface of the insulation film; and an etching stopper film (710) formed on the substrate between the transparent electrode and step reducing film of the laminate structure with the insulation film so as to be superposed on the insulation film on the substrate as viewed from above, and having a refractive index between the refractive indexes of the transparent electrode and insulation film.
