PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To correctly recognize various expressions and their expressive strengths in a robust manner, with respect to the direction of a user's head posture. SOLUTION: A template generation section 12 includes: a target segment selection section 121 which selects a target segment group, consisting of a plurality of segments meeting a prescribed condition on a learning image; a brightness profile model generation section 122, which generates a template representing a model of luminance profile variations of the target segment group selected by the target segment selecting section 121, with respect to a plurality of expressions and expressive strengths showing expressive degrees of the expressions; and a shape model generating section 123 which generates a shape model for approximating a shape of a face, on the basis of an input facial image.
