Zusammenfassung: | PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high field strength varistor material having a low power loss level, and further having another electric characteristic, that is, excellent performance related to, in particular, a nonlinear current-voltage curve (or each current density-field strength curve), impulse behavior, and stability of useful life. SOLUTION: This varistor material for a surge arrester contains ZnO forming a ZnO phase and Bi expressed as Bi2O3forming an intergranular bismuth oxide phase. The varistor material further includes a spinel phase, wherein the amount of a pyrochlore phase included in the varistor material is such that the ratio of the pyrochlore phase to the spinel phase is less than 0.15.
