PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stably hold a base material (31), without causing lowering of the detection capacity of a gas detection element equipped with the base material, constituting a light waveguide and a color development layer developing a color by reaction with a predetermined chemical substance.SOLUTION: The gas detection element (30) is equipped with the flat plate-like base material (31) constituting the light waveguide (12), the color development layer (32) laminated on the light-reflecting surface of the light waveguide (12) to develop a color by reaction with the predetermined chemical substance and holding members (21 and 22) for holding the base material (31). The holding member (21 and 22) hold the base material (31) on both sides of the base material (31) by the base material side parts (36 and 37), on the lateral side of the light waveguide (12).
