Zusammenfassung:	PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a weld backing metal with which, in butt welding, a high level of adhesion can be easily achieved between a member such as a column and a backing metal for welding and good welding results can be achieved. SOLUTION: The backing metal is used for butt welding using a column. In the backing metal, a group of grooves 10 disposed parallel to each other are provided in portions to be curved along the inner curved faces at corners of the column. A group of protrusions 12 are provided on the external surface of the backing metal for ensuring a route gap. The objective can be obtained when the height of the protrusion is 1.0 to 1.1 mm at a portion that forms a straight portion in use of the backing metal and is 1.5 to 1.6 mm at a portion to be curved.
