PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To secure a sufficient band without increasing the number of VC (Virtual Container) paths when transmitting a client signal through an SDH (Synchronous Digital Hierarchy) transmission path. SOLUTION: In a data transmission system, a client signal receiving part 301 properly terminates the client signal, and extracts byte data to be mapped into an SDH signal, a mapping processing part 302 maps the received byte data into a payload portion of a VC path of a plurality of VC-4-Xc to be stored in the SDH signal, and transmits the payload portion to SDH transmission paths 403-1 to 403-N. A mapping band can be significantly increased without increasing the number of VC paths by extending a VC path constituting a VCAT (Virtual Concatenation)to VC-4-Xc(X=4, 16, 64 and 256).
