PASSIVE OPTICAL NETWORK SYSTEM AND OPERATION METHOD THEREOF

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a passive optical network system which controls a transmission rate of a down signal to reduce the power consumption. SOLUTION: In the passive optical network system wherein a master station transmits signals addressed to slave stations to a plurality of slave stations as a time-division multiplexed frame signal and each slave station processes signals addressed to the slave station itself within the frame signal, the master station includes: an optical transmission interface for transmitting signals to the plurality of slave stations at a first transmission rate or at a second transmission rate higher than the first transmission rate; packet buffers for storing the signals addressed to respective slave stations; and a control unit for determining transmission timings and transmission rates of signals to be transmitted to respective slave stations, on the basis of amounts of signals stored in the packet buffers and transmitting the signals at the determined transmission timings and transmission rates and notifying respective slave stations of the determined transmission timings and transmission rates. Each slave station includes an optical reception interface for receiving signals of the first transmission rate or the second transmission rate and a control unit for controlling the optical reception interface on the basis of the notified transmission timing and the transmission rate.
