Zusammenfassung: | PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a spark ignition internal combustion engine which reduces a pumping loss without incurring unstable combustion due to enlargement of an overlap period. SOLUTION: The spark ignition internal combustion engine is equipped with: a check valve 30 which is arranged in an intake passage 20' and permits only flow to a cylinder for intake; a bypass passage 34 which is provided bypassing the check valve 30 and has a smaller passage area than the intake passage 20'; a control valve 36 which opens and closes the bypass passage 34; and an ECU (operation control means) 28 which controls opening/closing of the control valve 36 according to an engine operating condition. The control valve 36 is controlled to be closed at least in a partial load operating area at the time of non-miller cycle operation, and is controlled to be opened in a low and medium rotation high load operating area at the time of miller cycle operation.
