VIDEO DISPLAY DEVICE

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a video display device that detects a letter box area from an input video and displays a video area, except the letter box, on the entire area of a display while an aspect ratio is maintained. SOLUTION: The video display device includes: a display section the width/length of which is 1.78 or greater; an input section for inputting a video signal; a measurement section for measuring the horizontal synchronization signal and vertical synchronization signal and dot clock frequency of the input video signal: a discrimination section for discriminating the type of a signal from the measurement result of the measurement section; a conversion section for conducting resolution conversion based on the discrimination result of the signal discrimination section so that the number of horizontal pixels of the video signal equals the number of horizontal pixels of the display section while the aspect ratio of the video signal is maintained; a cut out section for cutting out a rectangular area that matches the number of pixels of the length and width of the display section in the video signal subjected to the resolution conversion; and a detection section for detecting a letter box area from an input video. When an video signal smaller in the width/length than that of the display section is input, the rectangular area cut out by the cut out section is automatically determined from the discrimination result of the discrimination section and the detection result of the detection section.
