Zusammenfassung:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of manufacturing a liquid crystal display device, obtaining an alignment layer decreased in rubbing marks and having reliability. SOLUTION: A first multiple-panel substrate LSB1 is opposite to a second multiple-panel substrate LSB2 where a plurality of columnar spacers are formed. In the first multiple-panel substrate LSB1, a laminate including a first organic insulating film is formed in a plurality of rectangular panel substrate regions PSD and a plurality of patterned metal films and second organic insulating films serving as seats for the columnar spaces are formed in a non-panel region. In this method of manufacturing a liquid crystal display device, the resin film formed on the top of the laminate is subjected to rubbing in the direction substantially parallel to or vertical to the array direction of the panel substrate regions, thereby forming an alignment layer. The second organic insulating film formed in the non-panel region at one side located in the direction of the rubbing starting side among the respective sides of each panel substrate region, is formed to cover the metal film successively at least along one side extending over the whole of the side.
