Zusammenfassung:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a mechanism with a compact structure superior in functionality and dust proofness, for reducing weight and size. SOLUTION: A recoil starter includes a case 1 provided with a reel pivot 2, a rope reel 4, a drive pulley coupled to an engine side, a cam 6 adapted to transmit rotation to the drive pulley, a buffer power storage mechanism interposed between the rope reel 4 and the cam 6, wherein force is accumulated in the buffer power storage mechanism, and an engine is adapted to start by transmitting a rotation of the rope reel 4 to the drive pulley via the cam 6. There is provided a power storage ratchet mechanism which is engageable with and disengageable from the rope reel 4 and the cam 6 between counter surfaces of the rope reel 4 and the cam 6. When the rope reel 4 rotates in an engine-starting direction, the mechanism causes mutual engagement to be disconnected and winds and tightens a power storage spring, and when the rope reel 4 rotates in an opposite direction to the engine-starting direction, the mechanism permits simultaneous rotation while they are mutually engaged.
