Zusammenfassung:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a combustion chamber structure of a direct injection type diesel engine furnished with a cavity at the piston top surface, capable of suppressing emission of soot into the atmosphere. SOLUTION: The shape of the cavity 30 consists of a constricted portion 32 located at the periphery of an opening 31, a center portion 34 shaped convex in the direction approaching a fuel injection valve 17, and a peripheral portion 33 connecting the constricted portion 32 and the center portion 34, the fuel injection direction from the fuel injection valve 17 is set to direct to the proximity of the border between the constricted portion 32 and the peripheral portion 33, and the peripheral portion 33 consists of a first portion 33a located farthermost from the fuel injection valve 17, a second portion 33b located at the constricted portion 32 side of the first portion 33a, and a third portion 33c located at the center portion 34 side of the first portion 33a, wherein the radii of arcs decrease from the second portion 33b to the first portion 33a and increase from the first portion 33a to the third portion 33c.
