PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide: an image reader for reading an original with high quality, at high speed and at low cost by an original fixed reading method; an image reading method; an image reading program; and a recording medium. SOLUTION: The image reader 1 moves a carriage at a speed corresponding to half resolution of designated resolution in a forward direction from an original front edge side to an end edge side and a backward direction from the original end edge side to the front edge side in a sub-scanning direction to perform original forward reading and backward reading, shifts the forward reading and the backward reading to the sub-scanning direction for one pixel of the designated resolution to execute a two-way image reading operation, and alternately combines forward image data obtained by the forward reading with backward image data obtained by the backward reading in each line to be image data of the original.
