Zusammenfassung: | PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To develop a method whereby an aluminum titanate ceramic can be produced, provided that the ceramic shows a low thermal expansion, high mechanical strengths and little dimensional change upon firing. SOLUTION: The method for producing the aluminum titanate ceramic comprises steps of: exposing a precursor mixture containing a titanium source powder, an aluminum source powder, a magnesium source powder and a silicon source powder to a temperature ranging from 900 to 1,350°C for at least 3 hr, provided that a temperature change per hr falls within the range of from -50 to +50°C/hr; and subsequently raising the temperature to 1,400°C or higher for firing. Here, in the oxide components contained in the precursor mixture, a silicon source is an amorphous aluminosilicate having a melting point of 800-1,350°C and accounting for 2-8 wt.% of oxide components contained in the precursor mixture.
